| Out Of Character Name: Kaitlin Age: 23 e-mail: nextyearsgirl@gmail.com AIM: KNJB11 IJ: Timezone: Experience: You know all this ;) In Character BASICS Name: Amalie Corina Zeller Age & Birthdate: 21; 28 February 1958. Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual Marital Status: Unmarried Blood Status: First Generation Pureblood Wand: 9 3/4 Cherry with Phoenix Feather core. Current Residence: London, England Affiliation(s): Ministry of Magic. Political Stance: As an employee of the Ministry of Magic, Amalie strongly supports their actions and believes that the Ministry always intends to do what is for the best of Magical society, even if it is not always successful. However, she does have a bit of her father's distrust of authority and so maintains a healthy skepticism when it comes to her government, which she considers patriotic. Though she disagrees with violence and Lord Voldemort's methods, she sympathizes with the desire for the cultures to remain separate and doesn't understand the appeal of Muggle culture or why Wizards would want to immerse themselves in it. If she knew about her father's membership in the Order of the Phoenix, she would undoubtedly disapprove. She dislikes vigilantism of any form and does not think that breaking the law is the solution to ending Lord Voldemort's reign of terror. Although she can be wary at times, she believes the Ministry is the best vehicle for effective positive change in their world. SCHOOL & WORK Former House: Hufflepuff Years: 1969-1976 Any Extras: A Prefect from 1974-1976. NEWT Scores: Ancient Runes O Arithmancy O Charms E Transfiguration E History of Magic O Occupation: Translator for the International Magic Office of Law. Attitude Toward Job: Amalie loves her job because it combines her two greatest passions: language and research. Her ideal job has always been one that allows her independence, solitude, quiet, and vigorous mental activity. She is diligent and hard-working, usually at the office well passed the end of the work day and handing in assignments a day early. She likes to be left alone to work and her attitude has proven to her bosses that she is able to be trusted and counted on to give a top-quality performance. She hopes to rise within the ranks quickly, though she fears given responsibility over other people will take away the independence she craves and loves. PERSONALITY Likes: Her family, reading, her job, cocoa made with dark chocolate, her terrier Allen, her flat, being alone to think, language, Wagner, red wine with dinner, seafood, texts on magical history, warm jumpers, wearing skirts, syntax, correcting other people's grammar in her head, running. Dislikes: Familial strife, loud people, itchy jumpers, people who lean against her desk and upset things, poor grammar, weeks of rain where she can't go outside, Muggle contraptions, missing her mother, having her boss hover over her. Greatest Fear: That her father will die before he and Paul make amends. Greatest Wish: To have a family of her own and be a mother. General Personality: Amalie is exceedingly quiet, cerebral, and prone more to studying other people than inserting herself into their lives. She is shy around those she doesn't know well, and most open about herself around her family, but she isn't one of those people who becomes an irrepressible chatter-box once you get to know her. She's quiet even around Paul. She is a definite intellectual, a trait she inherited from her father, and likes to study and read as much as possible--this is why she loves her job, it allows her to think and get paid for it. She actually found her Hogwarts education to be rather unsatisfactory, because she felt the History course was not taken seriously and there was too much emphasis on spells and wandwork and not enough on expanding one's mind and fostering intellectual curiosity. She is fiercely loyal to her friends and family, and a natural peacemaker, who is always striving to mend the riff between her father and brother despite their stubbornness. She thinks they have been fighting for entirely too long and the only time she usually becomes angry with either of them is when they have a pique of pride over whether or not they should be the one to make the first move. She thinks they are both immensely stubborn and is generally frustrated by the whole subject. Her greatest fear is that her father will die before he and Paul have a chance to reconcile, and she knows that despite his stubbornness Paul would never forgive himself if this were to happen. She makes frequent and (sometimes not entirely) subtle overtures toward making amends for this reason. She is very traditional and finds organized authority comforting, and this is why she supports the Ministry above all else, even if she acknowledges that they have made mistakes in the past. She defends them by saying that an organization made up by human beings, it is inevitable that some errors in judgment will be made. She doesn't think the solution to these errors is vigilantism, and so strongly opposes both the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix. Still, as a traditionalist she is sympathetic to the Pureblood's fear of their culture being overrun by Muggles, and she has a strong dislike for Muggle things, which she often finds noisy, garish, and simplistic. If forced to label herself, she would say she is a feminist but doesn't believe this precludes her from affecting a feminine appearance and wanting to be both wife and mother. She disagrees with the more misogynistic leaning of the established Pureblood families, thinking their ideas run counter to the inherent egalitarianism she sees in Magical society, which elected a female Minister of Magic two centuries before women would even have a vote in Muggle cultures. She was deeply effected by the death of her mother and still struggles with the hole this has left in her life. She finds it easier to trust and relate to men, and despite her desire to have a family is not always skilled at commitment. She has a strong fear of abandonment and has a tendency to cut people out of her life before they have a chance to hurt her--she never wants to be the one who is left again. She also has a strong resentment against other women who are close to their mothers, but she knows this is irrational and so keeps it bottled up. Her father was a bookseller specializing in rare tomes, and her mother a homemaker who had once been her father's employee. Her brother Paul had preceded her by two years, a much more energetic and outdoorsy child than Amalie proved to be. She grew up surrounded by books, speaking with her parents in their strange melange of languages, listening raptly to her father's lectures on the history of Witches and Wizards in Belgium, Germany, and England. While Paul was out-of-doors discovering the homes of the various creatures and playing elaborate games of make-believe, Amalie was sitting on her fathers knee and struggling to read whatever text he had open before him, or playing dress-up with her mother, who instilled in her the love of feminity and finery she would retain later in life. Her father insisted on excellence in his children and she took these lessons to heart, learning at an early age that his smiles were contingent upon her performing well. She strove to impress him but also struggled with the distance she felt put between them, and had a much easier, softer relationship with her mother and brother. She considered Paul her best friend and, while she could not usually persuade him to stay indoors and play some quiet game with her, confided everything in him and trusted him completely to protect her from the world. When he left for Hogwarts the year she turned nine, she was absolutely devastated and took nearly a month of moping before she allowed herself to return to her usual routine. The reassurance that she would soon follow him did not take effect for some time. Hogwarts. Seven months after her eleventh birthday, she did finally follow Paul to Hogwarts hallowed halls. He was kind enough to not give her the usual "you do not exist" treatment favoured for younger siblings, and allowed her to sit with him and his friends on the Express. She was silent the whole time, trying to take in the overwhelmingly stimuli of older students, strange clothes, strange accents, the whirring scenery, and all the talk of the people, places, and classes she was not yet familiar with. At the opening feast, she was the last student of her year to be sorted and the Hat struggled a bit between Ravenclaw (because of her thirst for knowledge) and Hufflepuff, where it knew her loyalty and kind heart would find a welcome place. It decided on the latter and she went to join her housemates, finding them to be delightful and welcoming, if a bit boisterous than what she was used to. Her first year began as a time of excitement and wonder and ended with the most difficult period of her life, losing her mother in a freak Floo accident. She was at school at the time and received the news from her brother, at first excited that he would be seeking her out and then wary as soon as she caught sight of the look on his face. The news shocked and devastated her, and she drew inwards until she was semi-catatonic, going through the motions of returning home, seeing her family, the funeral and the aftermath, in total silence. It would be some months until she conversed regularly with others again, and she would carry a haunted look about her for another two years. Though Paul blamed her father for Elspeth's death, she harboured no such animosity and the split between the two was a constant worry for her. She studied hard in her time at school and was fascinated by all the subjects on offer, though after her father's rigorous lessons she found the curriculum could be lacking. Her favorite subject was History of Magic and she found it scandalous that the Professor was so obviously going through the motions of teaching, and that her fellow students couldn't be bothered to stay awake for his lectures. Many times she would rant about his unsuitability to hold a teaching job, and as she grew older came to hold Binns partly responsible for why so many of her fellow students seemed enraptured with Muggle culture--so few had had an emphasis on Magical history at home, and now their only exposure to it was a sonorous ghost who clearly should have packed it in centuries ago. It was to be the first time in her life she found herself wanting to speak out against the established authority, but her naturally quiet comportment didn't exactly lend itself to civil disobedience, so she mostly stewed in silence. She was a hard-worker and earned the respect of her peers, who appreciated her for her gentle manner and willing ear, if not her sparkling personality or willingness to joke around that most of the other students seemed to possess. Her fifth year she was selected to represent her house as a Prefect, one of the proudest moments of her life. She held the badge up to her father and seemed to see some of the old light come back to his eyes, at least for a moment, and she knew she had done well. She performed exceedingly well on her OWLs and NEWTs, spending long hours studying in the library to earn top marks and to impress her father, a need that had become akin to an obsession since her mother's desk. Subconsciously, she was trying to heal the rift in her family by making her father proud and trying to return him to the man he had been. She thought if she could just restore the joie de vivre he had once possessed, Paul would see that he wasn't an evil, unfeeling old man and see that he had had no role in their mothers death. She was, obviously, unsuccessful. Adult Life. Upon leaving Hogwarts, Amalie immediately applied for several positions in the Ministry of Magic, seeking a job that would allow her intellectual pursuits as well as opportunity for advancement. She interviewed and was selected for an entry-level position in the International Magical Office of Law as a Junior Translator, reading briefs prepared by other Translators and checking for errors, and then resubmitting them to the original authors. After a year and a half of excellent work and long hours, she was promoted to her current position of Translator, specializing in French and German translation. She hopes that within another year she will make Senior Translator and will be given responsibility over other employees. Warded to Paul.
I think, given the complete lack of work for me to do today, I may do something unprecedented and leave early this afternoon. I know. No one is more shocked than I, I assure you. 3rd Person RP: As Celeste Lestrange here. Other Blurb: Amalie is a quiet, intellectual girl who works as a Translator for the Ministry. Intent on seeking reconciliation in her family, she is also struggling to conform her nuanced views of power and morality with the current political climate, occasionally with mixed results. Plans for your Character: I would like to continue to explore her relationship with her family, which I think is ripe for plotty goodness. I would also like to see how her nuanced political views conform with the ever-changing situation in politics at FTH, and if a time comes where her death would benefit plot, I would be interested in playing that out.
